How Work-Life Balance Impacts Your Well-being and Productivity
Understanding work-life balance may have been one of the best life lessons for me. I wish I had learned it sooner. My heart actually aches just a bit when I think about what I missed because I didn’t know how or when to turn work off. Achieving a healthy work-life balance is not even an option in my eyes. Life is hard and short. I heard the best thing on a podcast a while ago and it stuck with me. It was- Own Your Day. Are you owning your day? You cannot own your day if you have not figured out a good work-life balance. Tons of studies show that maintaining a balance between work and personal life not only enhances overall well-being but also improves productivity and job satisfaction. So it all around makes everything better!
Side note or rant- The whole “available 24/7” thing we see in real estate is nonsense. It is quite literally proven that you are more effective with a balanced schedule. Agents, please stop promoting that you are available at all times for your clients’ real estate needs. It is not only not healthy, but it casts a shadow of unprofessionalism in our industry. Can you reach your attorney or your accountant 24/7? No one can be on top of their game when they are run ragged trying to be available for work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is an EEEWWWW factor for me.
Here are five work-life balance benefits to keep in mind.
1. Improved Mental Health
A study conducted by the Mental Health Foundation found that individuals with a better work-life balance experienced lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. The research revealed that excessive work hours and a lack of time for personal activities can lead to burnout and negatively impact mental health. Conversely, those who prioritize personal time and engage in activities they enjoy reported higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction. So, real estate agents….how much better can you show up and deliver for your clients when you are in a better mental state?
2. Enhanced Physical Health
Research published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine suggests that maintaining a healthy work-life balance can have positive effects on physical health. The study found that individuals with time for regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and healthy eating habits experienced lower rates of chronic illnesses like cardiovascular diseases and obesity. Balancing work commitments with personal well-being activities can contribute to a healthier lifestyle overall. A personal note here……I need to improve my physical health. We may not always hit the mark but it is important to at least understand what the mark is!!!!
3. Increased Productivity
Contrary to popular belief, working longer hours does NOT necessarily equate to increased productivity. A study conducted by Stanford University found that productivity declines significantly after a certain number of hours worked per week. The research revealed that individuals who maintain a healthy work-life balance are more focused, motivated, and efficient during working hours. By allowing time for rest, relaxation, and personal activities, employees can recharge and bring fresh perspectives to their work, leading to improved performance.
4. Better Relationships
Work-life balance plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy relationships, both at home and in the workplace. A study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that individuals who prioritize their personal lives and spend quality time with family and friends reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction. Additionally, a positive work-life balance fosters better communication, reduces conflicts, and strengthens social connections, leading to a more fulfilling personal and professional life.
5. Retention + Job Satisfaction
Organizations that prioritize work-life balance tend to have higher employee retention rates and increased job satisfaction. You are an organization if you have a team and/or maybe you work for a brokerage (an organization) and you want to know that they value this philosophy!!!!! A study conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management revealed that employees who feel supported in achieving work-life balance are more likely to stay with their current employer. Moreover, individuals who have control over their schedules and can manage personal responsibilities alongside work commitments reported higher levels of job satisfaction and engagement. OMG, I always want to create and support this for my team!
Is it possible to achieve balance while running a successful real estate? Of course but you have to understand it, prioritize it, and set boundaries in order to make it happen. That’s my two cents!
